My research interests are in the history of technology, automotive history, gender, and STS. My dissertation focuses on the postwar automotive industry, through the late 1980s, and the development of automotive safety technologies, safety education, and safety campaigns. I follow engineers, designers, researchers, executives, regulators, and consumer advocates and activists as they navigate the complex world of automotive safety and determine best practices based on their own expertise.
I have presented multiple papers related to my work at professional conferences, including the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) annual meeting, Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) annual meeting, the American Historical Association annual meeting, The Maintainers conference, and others. I have also given guest lectures and organized two film and discussion series.
I have also presented, as first author, a presentation on my work and Dr. Suzanne Spencer-Wood's work on gender and playgrounds in Detroit and Boston, respectively. This presentation was given at the 2013 Society for Historical Archaeology Conference in Leicester, UK. Our resulting paper was published in June 2017.
Additionally, I have presented work related to my Masters thesis at two conferences. At the 2012 Society for the History of Women in the Americas Conference, I presented a paper about the female office workers at one of the mining companies. In 2011, I presented a paper at the "On the Surface - The Heritage of Mines and Mining" Conference in Innsbruck, Austria. This paper discussed the digital representation aspects of my Masters thesis and the issues associated with attempting to reconstruct a site via GIS with missing spatial features.
